Farmers are suffering by way of financial, physical, and mental issues, however over half of these issues are to do with finance. Many farm businesses have to close because, in dairy, the price of milk production is on average much more than what they are paid for. So they are always losing money due to low payment but also the prices of things like antibiotics to keep the cows healthy and pellets which they eat in the winter, as well as the cost of hiring machines such as a combine harvester to harvest the crops which makes silage that the animals eat all year round but mainly the winter.

The Farm Crisis Network gives farmers someone to walk through their problem with. For example, a man’s wife had cancer, she usually did all the paperwork but she was too ill to complete it. He had to do all of the physical work on the farm as well as the paperwork, there was incorrect paperwork and he got into trouble with the Single Farm Payment Agency; someone referred him to the Farm Crisis Network who helped him organise his documents and claim the appropriate benefits from the government. However, they did not just abandon him once the problem had been solved; he carried on seeing the volunteer for further guidance whenever he needed it most.

You may think – why should you care? But with more and more farm businesses closing down there will be less food available to everyone else, companies will have to import foods from other countries which will be more expensive and will not retain the freshness they currently have.
