This petition is being started to bring awareness and hopefully change in the treatment of carriage horses in the city of Savannah in regards to extreme heat and humidity. It has been brought to my attention that currently there is not any city ordinances governing the use of said horses in the event of extreme heat and humidity. There needs to be a specified temperature and humidity percentage that when reached carriage horse operators must cease the use of all carriages until said temperature/humidity levels have decreased. When a heat advisory is issued carriage horses should not be used during the stated advisory times. Horses are not exempt from heat related illnesses and death, which can be prevented if the horses are provided rest, shade and plenty of fresh water during extreme heat times. The following link is a well said article reported by Beverly English that sheds light on the horrific, un-addressed problem... http://www.examiner.com/equestrian-in-savannah/too-hot-for-carriage-horses-downtown-savannah-tell-us-what-you-think
I found her well written article while I was searching for some type of awareness to this problem.
Needless suffering and quite frankly sickening that it is continued to be permitted. Animal cruelty allowed as long as it benefits the all mighty dollar. There is plenty of other fun and exciting things to do in beautiful Savannah when the heat is extreme, let the horses be treated humanely. There are mulitple carriage horse services in Savannah and City Officials need to stop looking the other way and do something about this!
