The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) has historically had a very robust and flexible Continuing Education program leading to recertification. The fact that CRNAs are verifiably safe and conscientious providers is in part, a reflection of the efficacy of this system.
Recently the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) has finalized a new, proscriptive and complex Continued Professional Certification (CPC) program leading to recertification beginning in 2016. The CPC includes 60 Assessed Continuing Education Units, 40 Professional Activity Units, and 4 CPC Core Modules with exams every four (4) years and a CPC Examination every eight (8) years. This program is radically different from the current system, has not been tested or evaluated, and contains many known and unknown consequences that could affect your ability to practice.
The creation of this new program has caused a great deal of concern amongst CRNAs.
Therefore, the undersigned request that:
1) The AANA and NBCRNA agree to a moratorium on implementation of the CPC.
2) A revised CPC will be developed that builds on the current AANA CE program with reasonable modifications that may include additional assessed CEs, a recertification exam and an alternative to an exam.
3) This program be developed with significant collaboration between AANA and NBCRNA
4) A pilot program for evaluation (of content and validity) and revision (if necessary) of the changes and exam before full implementation.
The undersigned further acknowledge the need for Lifelong Learning as part of their professional responsibilities to themselves, their patients and other stakeholders.
Recertification affects every CRNA whether you’re an AANA member or not, whether your employer pays your dues and CE or not, and will eventually affect every current SRNA who becomes a CRNA. If you support and sign this petition, encourage your colleagues to sign on as well and please come to the AANA Business Meeting at the Annual Congress (Orlando, FL) in September to vote on two Resolutions that address the issues surrounding the CPC. You must be an AANA member to vote at the meeting so this is a critical time to be an AANA member.
