Phil Fish's perspective-shifting, mind-bending and utterly heart-warming puzzle-platform game
FEZ was without a shadow of a doubt one of the very best games to hit the world earlier this year (some would even say one of the very best of ALL-TIME), but despite its otherwise stellar form, there was (and, unfortunately, still is) something very, very niggly about it that has put the game under fire from the community: the nonsensical world map, or, more specifically, the lack of a fast-travel option.
As for why a 2D platform game would even NEED a fast-travel option? Well, the reason why is because
FEZ doesn't follow the conventions of a traditional linear level-to-level progression like other platform games do. Rather, the game is completely open, allowing players to take cute-as-a-button character Gomez wherever they wish by simply going through door after door around the game's many, many hub worlds and levels
within those hub worlds, solving the puzzles therein, very unlike anything you've likely ever seen before.
But there's a problem: not only does the world map suck and make literally no sense at all, but you
really do have to go through door after door after door after door after bloomin' door to get around in the game, and although it was intended to encourage freedom and
Zelda-like exploration, it's a complete and utter chore, as opposed to what the designer originally intended. Had the world map actually made sense and been more carefully thought out, that would provide at least
some leniency, but the fact that you have to literally traverse the ENTIRE game to go from one end of the map to the other with little more than misguided warp gates to give you a slight boost in the right direction? Hmm... it really isn't on. I mean, just imagine if you had to walk from location to location in a game like
Skyrim - it just isn't cricket, is it?
That is the reason why I have started this petition, because had this been something that bothered me and me alone, I would simply grin and bear it, but it turns out that this is something that literally THOUSANDS of people are pissed off with, and so I am calling out to you, the people, to support this petition and hopefully bring this issue to the attention of the developer.
All I ask, for the greater good of mankind? A fast-travel option in a future update. Please.
Phil Fish and Polytron Corp., we all think that both you and your game are absolutely fantastic, but please, for the love of all that is holy moly, do this one thing for us.
If this is a move that you would very much like to support and see happen, please take just a few seconds to sign.Much love,
