Help for Heroes was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry in October 2007 out of their desire to help the wounded Service men and woman that were returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. The message of the charity is very simple; anyone who volunteers to serve in the war, knowing they’re risking their life, especially at such a young age, is in our eyes a hero. They are ordinary people, doing extraordinary things and lots of them have to live with their injuries for the rest of their life. We might not be able to stop our soldiers getting injured in the first place, but together we can help them get better.
Our names are Jess and Ellie, and we are also very passionate about this charity. We can relate to it very well, as we both have brothers of around 18/19, the age that the young men usually are when they start fighting. Imagine someone that close to you travelling to another country over 3000 miles away, not knowing whether you will ever see them again, and if you do, that they could be seriously injured for life. We are trying to raise awareness of the charity and gain supporters for such a worthy cause.
Help for Heroes have a rehabilitation centre called Headley Court that the wounded servicemen and woman can stay in when they get back from war. It is full of facilities that are suitable for people with all sorts of injuries, including lost limbs, so that they can still do activities that a normal, healthy person is able to do. They help build these people back up physically and mentally. They hold ‘Battle Back’ activities that mean they can take part in water skiing and other fun, unusual activities like that.
