CAD Bay Area Chapter president, David Prince, speaking...

I disagree with DYUSA Bay Area Chapter to remove the Bear Hunt Statue (BHS) off the campus of the California School for the Deaf. The Bear Hunt statue is not a racist; it illustrate
s us to understand the visual history how the Indians fought against the nature. It demonstrates the visual education to everyone how it looks like in their time of struggle. It was like a battle in nature, Human versus Bear. Other way, what I see what the Mother bear fighting against human to protect her cubs. It shows that CSD is the mother of Deaf Institute of California, not Riverside and it protects our Deaf children as well.

Douglas Tilden had done an extraordinary artwork by doing in a three-dimensional vision history. My hat off was for him as he was the second president of California Association of the Deaf and a graduate of CSD. A perfect location in front of California School for the Deaf for the tourists to come by to see himself or herself beforehand. I was one of the tourists in the past when I was CAD Los Angeles Chapter President. I was, oh boy, so excited and I stood there staring at the statue and had goose bumps, so proud of his work that show the 3D history statue shown in front of CSD.

Interesting story…. I learned that the BHS was set at CSD Berkeley. University of California, Berkeley wanted to keep the statue because of “mascots” between Berkeley and Stanford. Mr. Klopping made sure it did not happen because he wanted to bring the statue with CSD when they relocated to Fremont because it belongs to CSD and continues with its history. Once again, BHS was created by DEAF man so it should be with CSD. Luckily, the statue was never tied into the ground and it was moveable. I thanked him. Mr. Klopping was the smartest man to set it in the front of CSD to draw the tourists to come and see the statue and CSD as well.

Respectfully yours,

David Prince

Comment from CSD's people of colors.

Stacie Smith it represents history it is considered a historical artifact the artist is/was deaf in that time period and he represents a breakthrough for the deaf community for a "can do it" success type of thing he was a genuinely a talented artist that is the whole point it shows us how truly talented he was and the bear statue is very breathtakingly real. if douglas was alive today he would be fighting to keep the statue on campus his talent is a major breakthrough for other deaf artists as well.

Tess Tessy-Contreras I asked my daughter Dahlia (hearing) to read many different status, comments and what's her opinion about this issue. Her opinion said I don't see a difference. Its ARTWORK!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heather Chmaj any color, gender, etc. i do NOT see a difference. honestly, it is a form of artwork expressed by douglas tilden and i see they are trying to make it into something it is not- racism.

Courtney Blaettler Bowers This is all about a white deaf man who made the hunt. They think that's racism and violent.  I don't look at it as racism. Indeed, there are lots lots of art made by deaf people and they ( art pictures, statutes, etc) can be labeled as racism, violence or whatever but why the bear hunt? Also, there's lots of statutes built by certain artists from the 1800's similar to tildens and they do not bother with it but CSD has to make this specific hunt a big deal. Sad.

Alethea Boyer-Mularski  ...Look at this side, there were already other artifacts that could have possibly oppressed in the certain periods and yet these are still shown. For example, there is a museum in D.C. about holocaust with lots, LOTS of things that are shown (pictures, people's piece of clothes, the unimaginable lab work done on these poor souls and much more) and YET that was an OPPRESSION. I see nothing wrong with CSDF keeping the statue, pronto.
