We urge you to support the passage of Ohio SB 316 / HB 487.

As members of Students For Education Reform at The Ohio State University, we believe that this bill will put Ohio at the forefront of education reform. In an education system clogged by unclear evaluation standards, the right for a parent to choose a quality education for their child has vastly diminished. It is of paramount importance that we create a transparent public school system that allows for school choice, and is accountable to the parents and children for whom it serves.

Senate Bill 316 will set Ohio on a path of accountability for our schools by ensuring that parents, educators, and students know whether schools are succeeding in preparing students for college and the workforce. This bill will enact legislation that simplifies the evaluation of schools, designating a grading system of A-F, providing parents and the public a more transparent understanding of their school’s performance. This also allows administrators to efficiently target failing schools and take the necessary steps to improving its students’ quality of education.

Passing this legislation will create new performance standards for Ohio schools across the board, including charter school sponsors, drop-out recovery schools, and career technical schools. This bill would stipulate a “3rd grade reading guarantee” policy which requires literacy from every elementary school student, incorporating blended learning strategies and other critical elements needed to strengthen Ohio schools.

By implementing clear ratings for school performance, this bill will provide Ohio families and the public with the information they need to evaluate their local schools. Senate Bill 316 was founded upon the principle of enacting higher standards and school choice; the time has come for us to live up to them make the right one.
