During June 2011 it was reported that a landowner in Somerset UK had allegedly seriously damaged part of a scheduled ancient monument known collectively as the Priddy Circles a Neolithic henge monument.
Incidents of damage to the heritage of the United Kingdom are increasing at an alarming rate, the incident at Priddy being just one. By signing this petition you are helping to send out a message to the people who commit these crimes and the authorities vested with not only investigating these incidents that the time has come for these matters, where appropriate, to be dealt with via judicial process. It should be recognised that damage maybe caused recklessly or intentionally, but any means which may include Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-Social Behaviour etc.
The \'Ancient Monuments & Archaeological Areas Act 1979, as amended by the National Heritage Act 1983 defines a monument as:
"Any building, structure or work above or below the surface of the land, any cave or excavation: any site comprising the remains of any such building, structure or work or any cave or excavtion: and any site comprising or comprising the remains of any vehicle, vessel or aircraft or other movable structure or part thereof.....(Section 61(7))."
