Northumberland County Council's Labour administration have decided to impose a Teenage Tax of £600 per year on post 16 students travel costs. We oppose this plan and continue to call on our Councillors to look at this again. They need to review where they can find savings from other parts of the budget, like staff car allowances, automatic incremental pay increases or empty property maintenance costs. We believe that it is unacceptable to charge our young people, the future of our county, to get to school or college and by taxing their travel costs we will be cutting off our poorest students from potential future careers and economic succcess for UK plc. Please support our petition to lobby the Labour Council to change their minds on this plan. Post 16 students should not have to pay for transport to study for their future careers & livelihoods. This is a teenage tax which will impact most on those least able to afford the charges.
